NOTES

To sow or not to sow?

I am not sure on if I will sow any rosemary. I know it did not survive in the garden but I have always had trouble starting it by seed so this year I am considering buying plants. Time will tell and I will update on this later.

If you are inclined to sow visit the review pages above. Rosemary is typically sown 10-12 weeks before the average frost date. In Zone 5, that date is around April 19th. Rosemary is very difficult to grow by seed and therefore I recommend getting plants from a local nursery and to start cuttings.

Sow Dates:

January

  • 25th – 12 week

February

  • 02nd – 11 week
  • 09th – 10 week

UPDATES:

Cuttings

Since it is far easier to start rosemary by cuttings, I recommend doing so soon after a plant is acquired. I do not usually get plants until April 19th or maybe earlier when I can set them in my small greenhouse.

______________

Time To Plant:

April 19th if there is not any signs of it snowing! Zone 5 can see snow sometimes in May! So, be prepared to protect your “babies”.

______________

Air Drying

I love drying herbs and rosemary is so aromatic. At the end of the season I take cuttings off the rosemary and hang the sprigs so the stem is hanging down and let them air dry.

  1. I need to go through my dried herbs to see what is still usable. Rosemary makes for a great potpourri or crush it and spread it around near your “mousey” areas and it will help detour mice!
